Rains destroy standing crops in Adilabad
Adilabad: The heavy rains in the district have destroyed standing crops — such as, cotton, soyabean and maize — over an area of nearly 3,000 hectares, according to the Department of Agriculture. But farmers’ bodies say that nearly 30,000 hectares were destroyed due to rain falling continuously since September 23. Fields of vegetables, such as tomato and cauliflower, have also been badly damaged
District Congress Committee working president Naresh Jadhav said that farmers paid Rs 103 crore as premium to insure their crops during the kharif season of 2016-17 under the Fasal bheema Yojana. They said that the state government should take steps to promptly get the insurance amount for the damage that the rain had inflicted on their crops.
He said that nearly 50 percent of the standing soya crop had been damaged in the floods, but less harm was done to cotton and other crops in the district. Crop damage was high in Bajarhathnoor, Indravelli, Neredigonda and Gudihatnoor in the district.
Assistant director of Agriculture Shivanand was appointed as a special officer to assess crop damage at various places in the district: he was doing so at Bhainsa on Tuesday. The Agriculture department is preparing preliminary reports on this.
The cultivation of cotton had come down in the district, but soya cultivation had increased.
