Andaman-bound ship stranded mid-sea, around 600 passengers on board

After the ship sailed for around 20 nautical miles, it developed a technical snag.

Visakhapatnam: Andaman-bound ship MV Harshavardhana, traveling from Visakhapatnam port to Port Blair, has been stranded on the high seas due to a technical snag for several hours.

The ship belonging to Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) had sailed from Vizag port on Tuesday afternoon. After the ship sailed for around 20 nautical miles, it developed a technical snag. The crew on the ship told the passengers the snag would be rectified soon.

As the passengers woke up in the morning, they realized the crew had been unable to rectify the snag. Aid is being sent from Vizag port to the stranded ship. There are around 600 passengers onboard the ship.

“At present, the ship is close to Chennai coast and the Shipping Corporation of India’s Chennai office is coordinating with the crew on rectifying the snag. We have learnt that the snag will be rectified in a few hours and the journey is expected to resume by afternoon positively,” a representative of Shipping Corporation of India’s agents in Vizag told Deccan Chronicle.

MV Harshavardhana is a passenger vessel being operated between Visakhapatnam and Port Blair by the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Administration. Most of the passengers on the ship are poor labourers from north Andhra Pradesh districts and some parts of Odisha.
