‘Tree-based agri can boost farmers’ income’
COIMBATORE: Partial shift to tree-based agriculture can help farmers enhance their income and a farmer can take care of his needs with high-value trees, said Chellamuthu, chairman of the Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association, addressing the media on lending support to ‘Cauvery Calling’, a movement initiated by Sadhguru in July this year.
At a press meet organised at the Coimbatore Press Club here on Tuesday, Chellamuthu said, “though farmers have been feeding the nation, their own socio-economic status has not improved in the past 70 years.
As the market price for farm produce is not determined by the farmer, his socio-economic status continues to remain poor.” Tree-based agriculture can be tapped by farmers, according to him.
Tamilmaran, coordinator of Isha Agro Forestry updated the media about the progress of ‘Cauvery Calling’ on the ground. He said that since the beginning of August, an intensive on-ground farmer outreach programme has covered thousands of villages in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, bringing awareness about agro-forestry to more than 60,000 farmers till date.
Mr. Tamilmaran added, “The movement has received an overwhelming response from farmers and eminent farmer leaders have announced their support for Cauvery Calling.”
