DMK protests against property tax hike

Singanallur constituency (DMK) MLA and party in charge N. Karthick led the demonstration.

COIMBATORE: As many as 300 DMK cadre including two local area MPs were arrested for staging a demonstration on Tuesday, condemning the hike in property tax in Coimbatore. They were part of a 500-strong group of DMK party members along with Left party cadres who staged a demonstration at the South Taluk office on Tuesday here.

Singanallur constituency (DMK) MLA and party in charge N. Karthick led the demonstration.

MLA Karthick told the press that in the last eight years, the city has not witnessed any development projects.

Underground drainage projects and roads remained incomplete.

Drinking water supply has to be regularized and most areas received drinking water only once in 15 days despite the continuous monsoon rains. Government had taken bribes and given the water supply contract to the Suez company, they alleged.

Despite giving numerous petitions to corporation officials and staging serial protests, the situation remains the same, added MLA Karthick.

Another demonstration was staged near Kuniyamuthoor led by the parties’ rural wing in-charges C.R. Ramachandran and Thendral Selva Raj on the same issue, though police denied permission.

As many as 300 party cadres along with MPs Shanmuga Sundaram (DMK) and PR Natarajan (CPI-M) took part in the protest and were arrested at the end of the demonstration.
