Chennai: Rs 1 crore worth gold seized

Chennai: The customs sleuths at the Chennai International Airport detected six cases of smuggling of gold on Monday and Tuesday and arrested four persons.

On Tuesday Abdul Munaf(45) of Ramanathapuram and Askarali(39) of Pudukottai, had arrived from Dubai by Emirates Flight were intercepted by the customs officials. A total gold weighing 1.41 Kg valued at Rs. 56.36s lakh was recovered from them. Furthur, on examination of their checked-in luggage, 26 used laptops valued at Rs. 1.30 lakhs and 8 cartons of Gudang Garam cigarettes valued at Rs. 19200/- were also recovered. Both passengers arrested.

On Monday morning, Kalandar Ali( 24) of Ramanathapuram, who had arrived from Dubai by Indigo Airlines Flight and Sulthan Syed Ibrahim(32) , and Askar Ali(26) both of Ramanathapuram, who had arrived from Sharjah by AirArabia Flight 1 were intercepted. during a search gold weighing 1.53 Kg, valued at Rs.59.6 lakhs were recovered and same seized under the provisions of Customs Act 1962. One passenger arrested.

In another case on Monday, Sabeer Khan(24) of Sivaganga who had arrived from Dubai by Emirates Flight was stopped. Rs.23.64 lakhs worth gold was recovered and same seized under the provisions of Customs Act 1962. The passenger was arrested. Further Investigation is under progress.
