BBMP: Soon, old buildings must get fitness certificates

Auditing to be conducted across city to avoid tragedies, says mayor.

BENGALURU: If all goes well, old buildings in the city that pose a threat to the lives of the people living in them and those nearby will be a thing of past. The BBMP is gearing up to conduct an audit of all such old structures across the city soon. Mayor Sampath Raj said, “Many old buildings in the city are in a dilapidated condition. Just by looking at these building we can make out that they are a threat to the lives of the people.”

To prevent such buildings from crumbling and triggering tragedies, the civic body will soon issue a notification to allow auditing of old structures in the city. “Assistant engineers will carry out the audit in their respective wards and submit a report. Based on the report, the owner will be asked to carry out needed repairs to strengthen the building,” Mr Raj said. “We have still not decided on action to be taken if building owners do not carry out repairs despite notices," he said.
