Anna University revaluation scam: Suspended CoE's bail plea dismissed

Chennai: The Madras high court has dismissed anticipatory bail petition filed by suspended former Anna University controller of examination G.V Uma accused in mega revaluation scam.

Recently, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption at Anna University unearthed the revaluation scam. And to get top rank in the university’s ranking, several colleges also allegedly bribed authorities, including top officials.

The irregularities were going on for several years. After conducting searches the DVAC registered a case against former controller of examinations of the university G.V. Uma and nine others for allegedly taking the bribe to boost the students’ marks in revaluation. The FIR revealed that 3,02,380 students applied for revaluation in April/May 2017 of which 73,733 students passed and 16,636 students improved their marks.

DVAC alleged that professor G.V. Uma, who was controller of examinations (CoE) from 2015 to 2018, had conspired with assistant professor P. Vijayakumar (former zone coordinator) and R. Sivakumar (former zonal officer) both from University College of Engineering, Tindivanam, and demanded Rs.10,000 from each student to boost their marks by altering marks. Following this G.V. Uma was suspended from the service.

In the advance bail, the petitioner submitted that she held the post of controller of examinations of the university between March 3, 2015 and March 2, 2018. During the check period, she conducted the examinations for the university as well as colleges affiliated to it in a fair and transparent manner without giving room for remarks from any quarters.

She claimed that the controller can neither influence the examiners nor the officers to award favourable marks to any student. The DVAC so far has not conducted proper enquiry and had opted to pick and choose method of arraying the petitioner in the scam, she added.

When the plea came up for hearing, DVAC informed the court that the they are yet to complete the investigation on the complaints of corruption and other offences in connection with the re-valuation scam.

Recording the submission, Justice M Dhandapani asked response of the counsel for the petitioner. The counsel submitted that he would withdraw the application if the court permits. Recording the submission, the judge dismissed the plea as withdrawn.
