Rains bring foul smell, dog menace in Hyderabad

A nala near the inlet has broken and rain water and sewerage is spreading on to the road.

Hyderabad: Silt accumulated outside homes near the Kapra lake outlet spreading an unbearable stench over the area.

A nala near the inlet has broken and rain water and sewerage is spreading on to the road.

Residents say dogs gather on the road to eat animal and food waste carried by the sewer water. Kapra resident R. Sridhar said the drain had cracked last year.
“We have been constantly following up with the GHMC. The situation has repeated this year, and the road has now caved in in the middle.”

The Kapra lake sewage from Kandiguda, Hi-Tension Road and 30 other colonies.

The nala was built by the GHMC when the colonies were not developed. After residents moved into these colonies, the inlet is flooded to add the sewage flows on to the roads. Ms Sri Laxmi, a local resident, said, “Even if it rains for half an hour, there is so much water that it appears like a river outside our homes, After that we have to bear the stench of silt and muck. These are not completely removed because they are sticky. Vehicles do not take this road as the tyres get stuck in the muck.”

Friday’s rains damaged the drain at more places, and water has eroded the road, making it uneven. A resident said the GHMC had done nothing for three years though complaints were lodged even at the head office.

70 families evacuated

Over 70 families residing near the apartment, constructed by Sree Thirumala Infra, in Deepthi Sree Nagar, Madinaguda, were evacuated on Saturday night.
Ms Hari Chandana Dasari, west zone municipal commissioner, said, “J. Prakash, managing director of Sree Thirumala Infra, had excavated three sub-cellars.

Following an inspection by experts from JNTU, it was found that structure may cause damage to the nearby apartments. Keeping the safety in mind, 70 families residing near the apartment were evacuated on Saturday night. The building has been seized and the builder has been asked to get a structural stability inspection.”

Earlier, town planning officials filed a case against the builder for digging a plot for the triple cellar, endangering the lives of people living nearby. The complaint has been filed with the Miyapur police station. GHMC took up the case following a complaint filed by Satyanarayana Enclave Flat Owners’ Welfare Federation.
