Confusion over medical admission

No clarity over tuition fee, bank guarantee.

Thiruvananthapuram: Confusion prevailed over medical college admissions as the third round of allotment was announced on Sunday. The tuition fee would depend on the final verdict of the Supreme Court on Monday, which would hear the managements' plea to fix the fee at Rs 11 lakh.

A key issue before the apex court is the bank guarantee, whether Rs 6 lakh proposed for some colleges, in addition to the annual fee of Rs 5 lakh, is to be paid as bank guarantee or bond on Rs 500-stamp paper.

With the deadline for medical admissions ending on August 31, many seats are likely to remain vacant if selected students are unable to pay the exorbitant fee.

There would be less time left to fill vacant seats before the admission deadline.
Another grey area is the implementation of the High Court decision permitting admissions to DM Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences, Al-Azhar Medical College and Superspecialty Hospital, Thodupuzha, and Mount Zion Medical College, Pathanamthitta. These colleges were not included in the third round allotment. There is no clarity either on the three medical colleges, already denied affiliation by the Medical Council of India. Can they make admissions during the spot allotment onAugust 30 and 31?

The Higher Education Department has directed officials of professional colleges entrusted with the job of issuing transfer certificates to candidates, selected for medical and dental courses during the third round, to be present on Monday, which is a holiday in view of Ayyankali Jayanti day.

Selected candidates have to join medical and dental colleges on Monday and Tuesday. Vacancy positions have to be ascertained on Tuesday evening before spot admissions in the next two days.

The final category-wise lists of candidates, who had applied for minority quota MBBS and BDS courses in private self- financing medical and dental colleges, are available at www.cee-kerala.org and www.cee.kerala.gov.in

The inclusion of a candidate in lists does not entitle him/her for admission under minority quota unless minority status is confirmed and conditions prescribed by managements of minority institutions are fulfilled in accordance with orders of the Supreme Court, dated May 9.

The category list of students, who had applied for MBBS course under minority quota in Azeezia Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Kollam, has been prepared on the basis of the order of the High Court dated August 25. Minority quota seats in private self-financing medical and dental colleges were allotted on Sunday.
