Driving licence through kiosks in Andhra Pradesh

Even illiterate persons can get LLR at easy-to-operate kiosks set up at RTOs.

Visakhapatnam: Illiterate people and also those not computer-savvy, no longer need to be worried to avail driving learner's licence in the state. The Transport Department would set up kiosks at Regional Transport offices to enable even illiterate people to get their driving licence by next month.

As per the existing system to get LLR, the applicants have to appear for the computerised tests where one must give 12 right answers (60 per cent) out of 20 objective questions based on road sense and signs. From a pool of 500 questions, the computer randomly chooses 20 questions which appear in three languages - English, Hindi and Telugu.

Speaking to this correspondent, Deputy Transport Commissioner (Visakhapatnam) S. Venkateswara Rao said, “The test was giving a tough time to the illiterate, forcing them to use vehicles without licence. Hence, we had recommended the higher authorities to go for an alternate system and that the kiosks equipped with audio questions and screen touch facilities could resolve the problem. The audio questions could also be heard in three languages —English, Hindi and Telugu. Some officials of our department had visited Pune which is already using the system, to study and learn about the machine.”

As many as 50 kiosks would be set up at the regional office. “We have already got a physical infrastructure on our office campus. I hope the kiosks are operational by September end. The kiosk has already been experimented on a trial run at Vijayawada. The department will set up the kiosks across the state,” he added.

He conceded that in small towns or cities, people bribe the officials to get the driving licence. The new initiatives such as online registration and introduction of kiosks were being taken up to minimise human interface and make the system transparent, he added.
