Bengaluru: CID interrogates AM Prasad, Pronab Mohanty for two hours

Both IPS officers plead innocence in Ganapati suicide case.

Bengaluru: The CID sleuths interrogated ADGP A.M. Prasad and IGP Pronab Mohanty, in connection with DySP M.K. Ganapati’s suicide, on Saturday. Both the senior officers have reportedly given statement that they did not harass Ganapati and were no way responsible for his death.

Sources said the Prasad told interrogators that Ganapati had worked under him only for three months. “During this period, I had not harassed him. As he was facing charges of dereliction of duty, I had discharged my duty as a senior officer. When I was the IGP of Western Range, he was the inspector of Kadri police station. In August 2008, there was a protest and he had lathi charged the agitators.

Local residents had protested and also observed a bandh in Mangaluru over the issue. Before lathi charging the agitators, he had not taken permission from me or the SP. So, I had ordered a departmental enquiry against him,” an official said quoting Prasad.

Prasad reportedly told that after he got transferred, he had no contact with Ganapati. “But as the Mangaluru incident became a black mark in his career, Ganapati would have thought I was the reason for the damage and might have levelled such allegations against me,” Prasad reportedly told the interrogators.
IGP Mohanty reportedly told interrogators that Ganapati never worked under him. He said he had met Ganapati only 3-4 times and he never worked under him.

“The home department had written a letter to the Lokayukta agency in February before promoting Ganapati to the rank of DySP. They had sought details whether Ganapati was facing any criminal case or any inquiry was pending against him.

As I was the IGP Lokayukta then, I had replied that he had no case in Lokayukta and was not aware of the inquiries against him. I would have given adverse report if I had an intention to harm him,” an official said quoting Mohanty.

The CID police, who had questioned former Minister K.J. George for three hours on Friday, grilled both the senior IPS officers for nearly two and half hours. With this, the CID has completed the questioning of all the three accused named by the slain DySP in a video statement. It is likely that the CID would wrap up the probe soon and file a report to the court soon.
