Hyderabad eateries overcharge customers

Teja also alleged that the bills issued to him by the restaurants did not mention the quantity of the drinks he purchased.

Hyderabad: Restaurants in the city continue to charge more than the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) from the consumers, despite strict orders from the legal metrology department not to do so.

During a recent inspection by the department, restaurants like Pista House, Chaitanya Family Restaurant and Bar and Sangeeta A Lounge Restaurant were found indulging in unfair trade practises.

This time, the inspections were conducted on the complaint of city-based social activist named Sai Teja. When he visited these restaurants on July 7, he found that all these were either charging more than the MRP or not serving the drinks in correct quantity.

Mr Teja also alleged that the bills issued to him by the restaurants did not mention the quantity of the drinks he purchased.

All inspections were held in July on different dates and cases were booked against all three restaurants as the officials found that the restaurants were violating Legal Metrology Act of 2009.

Pista House at Nizampet was inspected on July 11 and was booked for two violations under Section 18 of legal metrology Act — charging more than the MRP and not mentioning quantity on the bill.

Chaitanya Family Restaurant and Bar in Kukatpally was inspected on July 22. It was found that the restaurant was charging customers `25 for a bottle of water which has an MRP of `20.

Sangeetha A Lounge Restaurant and Bar at Madinaguda, which was inspected on July 9, was found serving drinks less than the specified quantity and also not mentioning the actual measurement in the bill.

After inspecting the trade premises, the officials booked cases and gave them 30 days to correct the violations, failing which they will be taken to the court.
