CPI embarrassed by MLA’s unbroken arm

Abraham told reporters on Saturday that he had never claimed that the police had broken his arm.

KOCHI: The CPI Ernakulam district committee has landed in a soup with the medical report revealing that Mr Eldho Abraham MLA has not suffered any fracture in his arm in the police lathicharge on CPI leaders and activists who took out a march to the office of the IG in Kochi a few days ago. The police submitted the medical report to the district collector heading a probe into the incident.

Mr. Abraham told reporters on Saturday that he had never claimed that the police had broken his arm. He said the atrocious behaviour of the police without any provocation cannot be assessed by the gravity of the injury suffered by the victims of the police assault. "To measure the gravity of the injury after a lathicharge is not a good practice. The police are known to protect themselves and they are capable of producing reports favouring them," he said.

According to him, the police assaulted him without any provocation and that he fell down soon after the water cannons were directed against the protestors. The doctors who examined him at the government district hospital said there was a possibility of hairline fracture in the elbow. The medical report of a private hospital submitted to the collector by the police, however, ruled out any fracture in the arm.

The report came as an embarrassment to the CPI district leadership as the broken arm of the MLA was a major theme of its campaign against the CPM and the police, even putting party state secretary Kanam Rajendran in a piquant situation.
