Seeds with lower weight impact profits

Upon inquiry the department discovered that seed companies were not aware of certain rules and regulations

Hyderabad: Legal metrology controller Akun Sabharwal said selling seeds less than the regulated weight was financially impacting farmers. He said strict legal action would be taken if there were irregularities in the sale of seeds, pesticides and fertilisers.

He was speaking at an awareness seminar organised by the Telangana Seedsmen Association to highlight regulations for seed manufactures.

The legal metrology department has conducted a series of raids, booking 154 cases and seizing Rs 2.35 crore worth of seeds. There were issues with inadequate quantity, lack of manufacturing or expiry date and no mention of licence to sell seeds.

Upon inquiry the department discovered that seed companies were not aware of certain rules and regulations.
