GHMC worker dies as trailer falls in tank
Hyderabad: A GHMC sanitation worker was killed when the cover of a septic tank collapsed under the weight of a tractor trailer that was dumping debris at Miyapur on Friday morning. The incident occurred at Janapriya Nagar Block 5 in Hafeezpet division when the workers were dumping debris from the digging of an underground drainage.
The hydraulic tractor, hired by the GHMC, had dumped two load of debris on the septic tank. When the staff returned to dump a third load of debris, the septic tank cover collapsed, taking the vehicle and a GHMC staffer, Venkatesh, 40, along with it at about 3 pm. Two other staffers on the trailer escaped.
His colleagues rushed to help Venkatesh and called in the police, fire and GHMC officials. After five hours of effort, officials could retrieve the body of Venkatesh, which was chopped into two pieces after a slab of the collapsed septic tank cover fell on him.
ACP, Miyapur, Ravi Kumar, said, “The workers were dumping debris on the tank which is not in use. The septic tank couldn’t bear the load and collapsed. The tractor almost went 15 feet inside.” Venkatesh, a Warangal native, was living in Miyapur for 10 years along with his family comprising his wife and two children. His son went into shock and fainted on hearing the news and was given medical attention.
