BENGALURU: In an attempt to improve the air quality in the city, the BBMP has planned to earmark Rs. 20 crore apart from working in tandem with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and other departments, said BBMP commission N. Manjunath Prasad. Participating at the discussion on improving the air quality in the city, Mr Prasad revealed that vehicular emissions contribute nearly 42% to air pollution, followed by dust rising on roads contributing to 20%, industries by 14%, construction activity by10% and diesel generator by 7%.
Further, he added that the particulate matter in the air in the city was twice the national standard. The civic body would monitor air quality across the city by installing quality monitoring stations in all wards. A digital display will be set up to create awareness among the citizens about air quality, he said.
A senior KSPCB official said after Namma Metro Phase 1 was commissioned, the air quality in the areas near the Green and Purple lines had improved by 13%. He also said the board had established seven continuous ambient air quality monitoring stations in the city and six mobile stations. The air quality at Hebbal, NIMHANS and Jayanagar is good, while it is satisfactory at KAVIKA on Mysuru Road and Basaveshwaranagar, as per the data from these stations.
