Telangana: Backward Classes panel to study research done on caste

The commission also asked all the departments to furnish details on schemes being implemented for the welfare of BCs.

Hyderabad: The TS Commission for Backward Classes has sought research papers from state universities on research done on castes in state during the last 40 years as part of its efforts to determine the Most Backward Classes within the Backward Classes in the state.

The state government had asked the BC panel in April this year to identify MBCs within BCs to provide special quotas in education and employment. The committee was asked to submit its report within six months.

The commission has already collected caste wise data in all departments from attender to secretary level to determine the percentage of government jobs secured by various castes under BCs list.

BC commission member Anjaneya Goud said the research papers of universities will help the commission conduct an in depth study on socio, economic and educational conditions of BCs in the state in the past 40 years. He said the commission has held extensive consultations with officials in 84 departments to assess the percentage of employees, caste wise, working in these departments.

Mr Goud said the commission completed this exercise in 40 days by covering two departments every day and gathered data of SC, ST, BC and OC employees working in these departments.

The commission also asked all the departments to furnish details on schemes being implemented for the welfare of BCs. It sought caste wise details of beneficiaries who availed these schemes and whether those schemes helped BCs progress socially and economically.

The departments were asked to submit all these details within 30 days.

The commission is making efforts to submit its report to government within the stipulated deadline of October.

During the Budget session in March this year, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar announced that the government will enhance quotas for MBCs in education and employment besides setting up a MBC Corporation with a corpus of '1,000 crore to implement various schemes for their development.

The BC Commission is also holding meetings with Centre for Economic and Social Studies, Centre for Good Governance, Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Indian Council of Social Science Research and other prominent research institutions for the in-depth study on BCs and make suitable recommendations to the government on the quantum of hike in reservations for MBCs in education and employment.
