Supreme Court concerned over misuse of dowry law

It said no arrest should be made till a preliminary report is submitted by family welfare panel.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed serious concern over the misuse of Section 498A IPC relating to dowry and harassment of men. It said no arrest should be made till a preliminary report is submitted by family welfare panel.

A two-judge bench observed that Section 498A was inserted in the statute with the laudable object of punishing cruelty at the hands of husband or in-laws.

The bench disposing of an appeal filed by Rajesh Sharma against an Allahabad HC verdict said we are of the view that involvement of civil society in the aid of administration of justice.
