Hyderabad: Rains continue to disrupt traffic flow

Rains continued to lash most parts of the city on Wednesday resulting in traffic jams due to water stagnation on main roads.

Hyderabad: Rains continued to lash most parts of the city on Wednesday resulting in traffic jams due to water stagnation on main roads. The worst affected corridor was Bowenpally-Tad Bun-Paradise where motorists were stuck in a 2-km long traffic jam. The stretch between Tad Bun and Paradise was inundated with rainwater bringing vehicular traffic to a halt.

“The Begumpet airport authorities have constructed a wall, blocking the natural channel of water flow. Even the stormwater line being laid with Japan International Cooperation Agency funds is pending at this stretch. The Cantonment Board staff had to pump out water from the stretch to clear the traffic,” said Cantonment local ward member K. Pandu Yadav.

Commuters in a taxi had a narrow escape at Kukatpally when the vehicle skidded into a small nala dug on the side of the road to facilitate rainwater to flow down the drain. There was also water logging under the Oliphanta bridge at Secunderabad and under the Malakpet rail bridge. Traffic moved at a snail?s pace here. Motorists said that water logging under these two bridges had become a perennial problem and demanded a permanent solution for it.

The city roads are dotted with pot-holes and motorists can?t identify these ditches when they are filled with rainwater. Such pot-holes are potential death traps and many a motorist has suffered injuries after the wheels of their vehicles have got stuck in these pot-holes. Traffic jams were witnessed at Sangeet to Chilkalguda, Chaderghat to Malakpet, Chandrayangutta to Owaisi Hospital, Che Number crossroads to Amberpet, and Jubilee Hills junction to name a few.

The Southwest Monsoon continues to be active over the state with the trough on the sea level chart now running from Vidarbha to South Tamil Nadu across Telangana and Rayalaseema.
