Sterlite final hearing begins

Since his arguments were not concluded on Thursday, the bench adjourned to June 28, for further hearing of the case.

Chennai: The final hearing on the petitions filed by Vedanta Limited, whose Sterlite industry was ordered to be closed permanently by the state government, commenced on Thursday before the Madras high court.

The hearing on the main and miscellaneous petitions began with senior counsel Aryama Sundaram commencing his arguments before a division bench comprising Justices T.S.Sivagnanam and V.Bhavani Subaroyan. Since his arguments were not concluded on Thursday, the bench adjourned to June 28, for further hearing of the case.

In its petitions, Vedanta Limited sought a direction to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to facilitate the immediate opening of its Copper Smelter Plant in Thoothukudi by immediate de-sealing of the plant with restoration of supply of electricity.

The Sterlite industry also challenged the orders passed by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and the state government, refusing to renew consent to operate the plant and permanent closure of the unit respectively.
