Kochi: Health varsity to have full infra at one place

1,400 teachers from affiliated colleges to get trained in modern medicine, Ayush.

Kochi: The Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) is all set to get its own full-fledged infrastructure close to a decade into its existence enabling it to scale up operations.

Apart from establishing three regional centres at Kochi, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram, it is going to train 1,400 teachers from affiliated colleges in newer areas of modern medicine, Ayush and allied sections by October. A seven-storey main academic block is being built at a cost of Rs 40 crore. It is nearing completion and house the Pareeksha Bhavan and Vignan Bhavan. An auditorium costing Rs 15 crore is to be built. These are apart from the existing building housing the university office. The regional centre being built at Kozhikode at a cost of Rs 16 crore is near IMHANS and it will focus on family health studies enabling the smooth evolution of primary health centres in the state into family health centres and in other related aspects. The centre will focus on training for personnel and research.

The second regional centre is in Tripunithura for Ayush and is being set up at a cost of Rs 40 crore. It is modelled to become an Ayurveda University, which is at an idea stage now. The third one is coming up on one acre area at Thiruvananthapuram on the medical college campus between the Regional Cancer Centre and SCTIMST and it will focus on health policy of the state. It is being built at a cost of Rs 26 crore and will focus on research that helps health policy decisions in the state.

The main academic block in Thrissur is having eight centres of learning housed at the Vignan Bhavan.

“KUHS started almost 10 years ago as an affiliating university. The faculty strength in 306 affiliating colleges is at about 15,000 teachers and we are going to have almost 10 per cent of them trained for our various projects by October,” said KUHS vice-chancellor Dr M.K.C. Nair.
