Hyderabad: Humayun lake faces existential threat

Civic officials on Thursday claimed that 15 lorryloads of debris had been dumped into the lake with the protection of over 100 persons.

Hyderabad: Despite the efforts of the GHMC to protect the Devuni Kunta or Humayun lake, the lake continues to be filled with debris.

Civic officials on Thursday claimed that 15 lorryloads of debris had been dumped into the lake with the protection of over 100 persons. The claimants of the land have prepared a layout plan and put the plots for sale.

A senior GHMC official alleged that he was threatened by goons at the site when he had gone there. He said the corporation was not receiving any support from the local authorities, especially the police and revenue officials.

The official said the property belonged to the claimants but it was not only a notified tank but also sikham land where construction activity cannot be taken up. “Violating the norms, the claimants have printed brochures and put the plots for sale for the property worth over Rs 100 crore and spread over five acres,” the official added.

He said the issue would be taken to the notice of higher authorities and they would restore the tank with the help of the police. He claimed that there will be no going back on the issue.

“We are strict on this. We cannot be spectators as the tank is the only source of groundwater in a 5-km radius. The corporation will initiate stringent action against the ground staff who were involved in the act,” he said.
