Students, parents protest fee hike in Sreenidhi institute

Following the order we have asked students to pay the fee and 90 per cent of the parents paid the fee last year.

Hyderabad: Hundreds of parents and students from Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology protested on the college campus in Ghatkesar against a hike in the fee in the convener quota of the BTech course from Rs 97,000 per to Rs 1.37 lakh.

Mr D.V. Krishna Rao, treasurer, Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology Parents Association, said, “The college is troubling students during exams by not giving hall tickets and demanding additional fee. As the TS government has not issued a GO, parents are reluctant to pay the additional fee.

Mr P. Narasimha Reddy, executive director, Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology, said the fee regulation committee had fixed Rs 97,000 against the college’s claim of Rs 1.4 lakh. “We moved court and sought a fee hike as the fee is not sufficient for salaries and other expenses. Our monthly budget for salaries is Rs 3.5 crore. The court fixed the fee at Rs 1.7 lakh per annum and directed the government to issue a GO but it has not been issued so far. We went to court again,” he said.

The court instructed the college to collect Rs 1. 37 lakh, as the GO had not been issued, and deposit Rs 20,000 per student in case the money had to be returned if the fee was fixed at less than Rs 1.37 lakh.

“Following the order we have asked students to pay the fee and 90 per cent of the parents paid the fee last year. Only 10 per cent parents are against the fee hike this year. We are just following the court order,” he said.
