Maneka Gandhi backs single woman travellers

Hotel Deccan in Erragada turned down admission to Ms Nupur Saraswat on grounds that she was alone and it was unsafe.

Hyderabad: Union minister, Maneka Gandhi ordered the Telangana state government to submit a report on why a hotel in Hyderabad had discriminatory admission policies for women who were solo travellers.

This follows the incident of a NRI woman being denied a room in the hotel by virtue of being a single.

In a series of tweets, Ms Gandhi expressed her concern over the incident.

Ms Nupur Saraswat was in the city as part of a multi-city tour for her performance. Hotel Deccan in Erragada turned down admission to her on grounds that she was alone and it was unsafe.

Ms Saraswat had tweeted about the incident and posted it on her Facebook page, which went viral on Sunday.

The 22-year-old arrived from Singapore to her hotel in Hyderabad on Saturday, where she said she was told that single women travellers are prohibited from staying there. “So, I am standing outside a hotel in Hyderabad which didn’t let me stay because they realised I was a “single lady”.
