BBMP Ward membership: CfB seeks more time

As of today, our records indicate 187 citizens have submitted applications for ward committee.

Bengaluru: With the high court set to hear the case relating to ward committees on Wednesday, the Citizens for Bengaluru (CfB) has requested the BBMP to allow more time to submit applications to these committee.

CfB, which had played a crucial role in raising awareness about ward committees and the need for active citizen participation, has written to BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad to extend the deadline for submitting applications by at least two weeks. In the letter dated June 27, CfB has also urged the Commissioner to publicise the process of scrutiny and selection.

CfB Coordinator Srinivas Alavilli said, “We encouraged citizens to nominate active people in their locality and approached them to apply. People from different walks of life young and old, men and women, representatives of RWAs and NGOs, have applied to be part of the ward committee.”

As of today, our records indicate 187 citizens have submitted applications for ward committee and received acknowledgement from BBMP office, Alavilli said and added that even more people have submitted their application, but CfB do not have information with them at the moment.

He urged the Commissioner to make a fair and transparent process that results in an inclusive and diverse ward committee with committed members. CfB requested the Commissioner to extend the deadline by two weeks.

Repeated calls to Mayor G. Padmavathi, BBMP Commissioner, BBMP Joint Commissioner Sarfaraz Khan to know the overall number of applications received and how will they will be scrutinized were not answered.
