Telangana government is planning special training for women to get numbers up

The government has already increased quota for women in local bodies and market committees to 50 per cent.

Hyderabad: The Telangana state government is devising special programmes to increase the representation of women employees to 50 per cent in various departments.

Special emphasis is being laid to increase their numbers at higher levels, at the rank of gazetted officers’ posts, where their representation way below the specified 33-per cent mark.

Special study circles for women are being planned in all districts to train them to crack the ongoing series of recruitment exams.

The government has already increased quota for women in local bodies and market committees to 50 per cent. Last year, it introduced 33 per cent quota for women in police.

The government is seriously considering a proposal to raise the women’s quota from 33 per cent to 50 per cent for all government jobs.

“In districts like Adilabad, Nizamabad, Khammam and Nalgonda, the representation of women is very poor. Though a significant number of women from these districts apply for recruitment exams, they fail to make it to the selection list. They are losing a place in the merit list by a few marks,” Ms V. Mamatha, leader of Telangana Gazetted Officers Association told this newspaper.
