Hyderabad: Rare copies of Quranic manuscripts on display

Another notable exhibit is the Quran of the last Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan, which is kept in a silver box.

Hyderabad: Antique and rare copies of Quranic manuscripts written in different calligraphic forms and styles are on display in an exhibition titled ‘Quranic Manuscripts’ organised by HEH the Nizam’s Museum. The exhibition will continue till June 9. The highlight of this exhibition is a Quran in which every page except the first page starts with the twenty-seventh letter of the Arabic alphabet — ‘Waw’.

Another notable exhibit is the Quran of the last Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan, which is kept in a silver box.

The collection also includes copies of five Quranic revelations inscribed on leather immediately after the time of the Prophet Muhammad and some pieces written by renowned calligraphers such as Yakut al Mustasami of Iraq, Abdullah Assirafi of Iran and Hamdullah Alamasi of Turkey.

Antique and rare copies of Quranic scripts written in different calligraphic forms and styles like Kufic, Hijazi, Rayhan, Ma’el, Maghrabi, Naskh, Thulth, Tauqi, Riqa, Muhaqaq, Nastaliq, Ghubar, Bahar and Chinese style are displayed. Ahmed Ali, curator of the Nizam’s Museum, said an exquisitely embroidered Quranic chapter and verses by Hyderabadi artist Meherunissa Begum is also on display.
