Hyderabad: Centre cancels 36 PG seats in Nizamia college
Hyderabad: Thirty-six post graduate seats have been cancelled in Government Nizamia Tibbi College for the first time this year due to the lack of infrastructure and adequate faculty. The courses were introduced since 1972.
There will be no PG courses for specialities like general medicine, gynaecology, paediatrics and others. The Central Ayush ministry has refused to continue the courses due to lack of facilities, which was not rectified by the state department of Ayush.
Dr Abul Hasan Ashraf, member of the Government Nizamia Tibbi College and Hospital Development Society, said this was the first time since the inception of the courses that they were cancelled.
“There have been several representations to the Ayush ministry and state department that professors must be recruited. The lack of infrastructure has been noted and pursued with the state government authorities but no action has been taken,” Dr Ashraf said.
The deletion of seats from the college is a big blow to Unani medical education in the state. Unani doctors are upset that the Ayush department and the health department treat their representations without seriousness, despite several reminders.
Dr Syed Zain, senior Unani physician, said, “Government Nizamia College is called the Oxford of Unani education. This is a major blow to the college and the Unani education stream.”
The sanctioned posts have not been filled from the last decade. Doctors who graduated from the college state that in 2004, the number of seats was reduced but then chief minister Y.S. Rajashekar Reddy ensured that recruitment of staff was done and the seats restored.
After the Centre’s decision became known, doctors met with state principal secretary health and family welfare, Shanti Kumari urging her to take immediate measures so that the seats can be restored.
