Picket road checks: Army asks motorists for licences

Identity cards are also being checked before drivers are allowed to enter the roads.

Hyderabad: Army personnel have begun asking vehicle owners to wear helmets and show their licences on the Picket-Marredpally road in the Secunderabad Cantonment area.

Identity cards are also being checked before drivers are allowed to enter the roads. Mr Krishank Manne, a Congress leader, said, “When I showed my student ID card, they insisted that I show my Aadhaar card. I was allowed only after showing the Aadhaar card. A traffic jam is happening at the road because of this.”

Asked about this, an Army official said, “We are asking this for people’s safety. When we ask two-wheeler reiders to wear a helmet, it’s not for us, it’s for their safety. Anybody can say good things.”

Mr N. Ramesh, a resident of Marredpally, said. “If I am not carrying a helmet or my licence, I am ready to pay the challan and leave immediately as I may have something important to attend to. But they are not doing this, which is resulting in arguments with motorists.”

Rules does not permit the military to collect fines as law and order and traffic are state subjects and falls under the state’s jurisdiction even in Cantonment limits.

The checks are going on though the order states that, “All barriers, check posts and road blocks will be removed, vehicles will not be stopped or checked and sentries dealing with civilians will be polite.”
