An Equal Music: Fusion of folk and classical by Iydani

Padma Bhushan awardee S.P. Balasubrahmanyam launched the Iydani project for music.

Bengaluru: Noted singer and Padma Bhushan awardee S.P. Balasubrahmanyam launched the Iydani project for music at Radisson Atria in the city on Saturday.

The project, which aims to bring to the forefront the beauty of folk and Indian classical music, has been put together by Hamsalekha Music Trust, run by the legendary Kannada composer and songwriter Hamsalekha.

In his address Hamsalekha said, “This year is full of examining, experimenting and working on fused version of folk music for us through Iydani.”

The 11-month long project will work harmonies with traditional folk instruments and also publish textbooks on classical music. Other programmes such as Desi Supreme Man, an opera theatre workshop, a Desi Jazz Music Show and a celebration of World Folk Day this August are on the cards, he said.

Balasubrahmanyam stressed on the need to bring more of folk music culture and integrate it with the urban culture scene.

“Folk music is the foundation of Indian culture. Without it, a firm footing isn’t possible. A lot of world folk culture finds its roots in Indian folk. Without preserving it now, it may become impossible to preserve this treasure for the future generations.”
