THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The authorities have advised the people residing along the coastline to move to safer locations in view of the threat of sea erosion due to the cyclone. Several houses were destroyed and many people are at the relief camps functioning at Valiyathura BUDS UP School and Valiyathura UP School.

On Saturday, corporation Mayor V. K. Prasanth distributed relief materials to the inmates of relief camps.

The deep depression over southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm, 'Fani'. The regional meteorological centre said that Fani was likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours.

Strong winds and heavy rain were expected in Kerala from Sunday onwards. Fishermen have been advised not to venture out into the sea for the next two days.

Heavy rain was expected in Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts on Monday where yellow alert has been declared.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has asked the people not to go for picnics in hilly areas or beaches. Journeys through landslide-prone areas should be avoided from 7 pm to 7 am. Do not park vehicles near canals and streams near roads in view of landslide and debris flow, the KSDMA advisory said.

On Sunday, winds at a speed of 30 - 50 km per hour are likely and on April 29 and 30, the speed would increase to 40 - 60 km per hour.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in his Facebook post has asked the KSDMA and district collectors to take precautionary measures. He has urged the people to adhere to the advisory provided by the KSDMA.
