TPCC moves SHRC on maternal deaths

TPCC women's wing stated that around 20 women had died in the Petlaburj and Koti maternity hospitals in the past month.

Hyderabad: Women leaders from the state Congress Committed led by former minister D.K. Aruna moved the State Human Rights Commission on Thursday, on the pathetic conditions in the government hospitals and the increasing number of maternal deaths.

The commission ordered the Chief Secretary and the principal health secretary to inquire into the petition and submit a detailed report by August 3.

The Balala Hakkula Sangham also filed a petition with the commission seeking justice for the infants who had lost their mothers due to the negligence of staff and doctors of government hospitals.

In its petition, the TPCC women’s wing stated that around 20 women had died in the Petlaburj and Koti maternity hospitals in the past month. Many deaths were not reported, it claimed.

The petition said that a few hours before the visit of the Congress leaders to the Petlaburj maternity hospital on Tuesday, a woman delivered had twins. She developed seizures and was shifted to the ICU but the babies were left unattended on the cot and were surrounded by cockroaches, the petition alleged.

The leaders alleged that since June 2014, around 3,000 deaths had been reported across the state, due to the negligence of doctors and paramedical staff in government hospitals and the use of drugs banned by the TS Medical Services and Infrastructure Corporation, which had led to the death of women who had developed complications soon after delivery.

They alleged that shortage of staff in important posts was affecting services in hospitals. They requested the SHRC to direct the government to pay Rs 5 lakh compensation to the family of the women who died.
