Kufos to form board for placement of students

As part of the programme, an Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) will be formed under each school of the university.

KOCHI: In a major attempt at benefiting students, the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) will launch a slew of programmes under its placement cell for ensuring jobs for students as they pass out.

As part of the programme, an Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) will be formed under each school of the university. Major companies, industrial bodies and agencies who offer jobs in fisheries and marine areas will be included in the IAB.

Students will be given intensive practical training on required job skills for the industry, under the IAB which includes companies functioning in areas such as fish processing, food processing, quality assurance, value addition, aquaculture, geoscience, marine drug formulation, microbiology, biological oceanography, remote sensing, management, energy management, fisheries engineering, coastal and harbour engineering, biotechnology and marine chemistry. A university-industry linkage will be strengthened by the efficient operation of the IAB.

“The placement cell, with the support of the IAB, will organise job fairs ensuring the participation of major companies and industrial bodies functioning in the areas. Students will be given special training on specialised jobs according to their skills and aptitude. Also, general training on language and communication, interviews and personality development will be provided to the students under the placement cell,” said an official of the university.

The IAB, constituted earlier under the department of food science and technology at the varsity, was a great success. All the students who completed the MSc food science course got placements in the companies included in the board, said the official.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the directors of the schools. Registrar V.M. Victor George, who presided over the meeting, said the university would ensure that the students would be getting adequate training on both academic and industrial aspects as well.
