Thiruvananthapuram: A+ cheer in SSLC

All-pass record for 88 city schools; 2,221 A+ in Tvm.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is good news at 88 Thiruvananthapuram schools – they are the ones which have got an all pass at the SSLC exam. Of these 40 are unaided schools which include Christ Nagar English Medium School, Nirmala Bhavan Girls’ Higher Secondary School and Carmel Girls’ Higher Secondary School.

Among the 28 government schools that secured all pass is the Government Central High School, Attakkulangara, which a year ago was branded uneconomical as it did not have many students. “A total of 12 students appeared for the exam and passed,” says Suresh Babu, Headmaster. There are 20 aided schools as well.

The schools which secured 100 per cent had been literally burning the midnight oil to ensure victory. Many schools conducted night classes. The Model Government Boys’ Higher Secondary which missed the 100 per cent mark because of two students who failed is one of those. Headmistress K K Oormila Devi says, “For years our pass percentage would hover around 87 per cent. But ever since we introduced Model Mission 21 C, the results have improved. Last year it was cent per cent. This year, it is 98.3 per cent.”

Many schools gave focused attention to students who were not faring well in exams. Christ Nagar English Higher Secondary School had conducted remedial coaching for those who were weak in studies, according to Father Bino Pattrakalam.“The teachers had to work extra time to make this result possible,” he said. Of the 53 who passed, 23 have got a distinction.

This year, all over the state, the number of A+ is significantly higher than last year. Carmel, where 157 appeared and passed, 74 have got A + in all subjects. Nirmala Bhavan, where 150 passed, 36 students have got A+ in all subjects. There are 2221 A+ in the district.
