Wild animal threat to pets, crops in Aroor
Kozhikode: Aroor, in Purameri gram panchayat near Vadakara, is under threat from wildlife. As the mercury level soars, animals from the forests are increasingly entering human inhabitation and preying on pet animals.
More than a dozen of chicken, goat and cats were killed in Aroor by unidentified animals. The latest is the killing of chickens of Cheeluparambath Biju and Koyilothumpoyil Kunhiraman.
The cage of chickens were destroyed and birds killed.
On Tuesday, four goats of Mariya of Nadakumeethal Pulikkalthazhe in Aroor have been killed. "I eke out a life by selling goat milk. Now my survival is at stake. The government should either give compensation or distribute goats to me," says Mariya.
The goats or chickens were not eaten. Their blood has been sucked out, according to the local natives.
Last week, 15 goats of Edatharoth Ammad and Villankandy Jamal were found to be killed.
Pet cats too were not spared. "Such wild attacks began after the onset of summer," says Jamal.
Further, the vegetable cultivation of several people has been widely destroyed. Coconut sapling, tapioca, cucumber, cabbage, ladies finger, tomato and spinach were eaten at nights
The affected people has demanded protection from the wildlife as well as compensation as a majority of them are farmers whose livelihood has been destroyed.
