Decision over Wayanad seat likely today

The Central Election Committee is expected to meet at 4 pm on Thursday, and the leaders here are keeping their fingers crossed.

Thiruvananthapuram: The uncertainty over Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s candidature from south continued for the fifth consecutive day on Wednesday. The Central Election Committee is expected to meet at 4 pm on Thursday, and the leaders here are keeping their fingers crossed.

Delhi state in-charge P.C. Chacko said he had apprised Rahul Gandhi of the implications of contesting from Wayanad taking on a CPI candidate.

Rumours were rife that Mr Chacko explained to Mr Gandhi why he lambasted Kerala leaders. But he rubbished it saying there was a meeting with him on allying with AAP in Delhi.

“I apprised him that the KPCC leadership had not thought of the political implications if Rahul Gandhi contests from Wayanad as his principal adversary will not be the BJP but the CPI,” he told DC.

“This will only convey a wrong message to voters. I also told him that Karnataka would be ideal as then his rival will be the BJP.”

He felt the KPCC leadership should not have jumped the gun.

When Chacko held a press meet a day after the announcement by senior leader Oommen Chandy, the majority of Congress leaders here were upset. But later, Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala and KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran also toed the same line.
