Hyderabad: The top government auditor has criticised the state government for its failure to frame a policy based on the National Water Policy 2012 to ensure safe and adequate drinking water to people.
Out of 53 Urban Local bodies (ULBs), CAG selected seven ULBs for a detailed scrutiny based on lowest one pcd (litres per capita per day). In all the seven test-checked ULBs, there was a gap between demand and supply ranging from 19 per cent to 71 per cent.
The duration of water supply ranged from one hour once in four days to one hour per day against the target of supply of water for 24 hours. The study was conducted in Kodad, Man-uguru, Mandamarri, Vikarabad, Bodhan, Gadwal and Metpally.
“Water is a natural resource, which is essential for human existence. The objective of water supply system is to ensure supply of safe and adequate quantity of water at reasonable cost to the user,” CAG remarked.
CAG found that the government had not set up water regulatory authority for uniformity in operations and pricing for supply of water, no importance was given for building rain water harvesting structures.
