Left ruined Bengal in 34 years, Mamata in five: Modi

PM attacked Mamata Banerjee with the Narada sting, saying she has become a “shahenshah†(emperor) from a street-smart politician.

Kolkata: Kickstarting his West Bengal Assembly poll campaign from Kharagpur on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with the Narada sting, saying she has become a “shahenshah” (emperor) from a street-smart politician.

He targeted the Mamata government for “doing nothing” for Bengal in the past five years, saying while the Left had destroyed the state, breaking the back of industries, over 34 years, the TMC government had “buried” it in just five years.

Mr Modi also ridiculed the pact between the Left and Congress, calling them “opportunists” as they were wrestling for power in Kerala but had joined hands in Bengal.

Ridiculing Ms Banerjee, he said the “Opposition leader who used to fight on the streets, that Mamata Didi has changed so much that she doesn’t care for anybody”.

Addressing his first election rally in West Bengal in Kharagpur, Mr Modi said: “Five years ago, I used to hear the word parivartan (change) a lot. I also thought there will be change in West Bengal. There was a change, but it was in Didi’s nature, in her motives and in her manner of work.”
