Hyderabad: A city realtor, his wife and daughter died when the car they were travelling in fell into a canal at Dugyala in Nalgonda district on Thursday, The couple’s 14-year-old son was rescued by the locals.

The deceased include Orusu Rangaiah, a realtor from Vanasthalipuram, his wife Alivelu, 36, and daughter Keerthi, 19. The family hailed from Vadde-ragudem hamlet in Dug-yala mandal, Devarakonda DSP Maheshwar said.

Alivelu was a homemaker. Keerthi was studying engineering first year at a private college and son Karthik, who was rescued, is a Class VIII student.

The family had rented a car to attend a marriage in their village. They started their return journey at about 8.30 am on Thursday. At 8.45 am, two locals, Rambabu and Vijay, noticed the car being swept away in the canal of the Alimineti Madhava Reddy Project.

They jumped into the canal and rescued Karthik but were unable save the others as the car sank.

On receiving an alert, the police with the help of a crane retrieved the car at about 10 am, DSP Mahesh-war said, Reports initially said the car suffered a tyre burst because of which Ran-gaiah, who was at the wheel, lost control of the car. The canal did not have a railing at that spot.

Mr Maheshwar said, “The car had not travelled more than five kilometres on the service road along the canal and fell in the waters.” He said that there were no signs of a flat tyre. Dizziness or misjudging the road might have led to the mishap, he said.
