Residents, shoppers in Nampally vexed with drug addicts nuisance

If cops try to apprehend them, they either attempt to injure themselves or attack police personnel.

Hyderabad: Residents and shoppers in Nampally are vexed with the nuisance created by drug addicts — both men and women. Drug users are encamping under the balconies of the houses and in front of the shutters of the shops.

These drug addicts, who apparently come from abusive backgrounds, are in the age group of 16-24 year and are roaming the streets in the nights. They pick up quarrels with each other on petty issues and if someone tries to intervene, they get aggressive. Police has failed to curb this menace. If cops try to apprehend them, they either attempt to injure themselves or attack police personnel.

Most of them are using whitener, adhesive solutions, petrol, cough syrup and marijuana and get money to support their habit by begging in the Dargah. Philanthropists give them food two times a day. Mr. Mohammed Abul Arif who runs a medical shop in the area said, “These youngsters do not hesitate to urinate in front of shops in the nights. If you try to disperse them, they use filthy language and attack us with sharp blades. Women are worried about entering the lane to the Dargah lane as they often tease them.”

Syed Sajjad Ali, a resident of the Goods Shed area, said “They are pilfering petrol from parked bikes and stealing batteries of the local lorries to purchase the drugs.” He said recently two youth got into a scuffle near the Dargah before the cops. “Police is incapable of handling them. There is a need to tackle them with an iron hand,” he said.
