Education directorate gets approved

The report was submitted by the committee to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on January 24.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Cabinet on Wednesday approved the first phase report of the high-level committee headed by Mr M.A. Khader, former director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) which recommended that Classes I to XII should be brought under a single directorate. The report was submitted by the committee to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on January 24.

The committee proposed that teachers from Classes I to VII should have degree and BEd as qualification and teachers from Classes VIII to XII should have PG and BEd as qualification. As per the report, Classes I to VII will be primary and Classes VIII to XII secondary.

The proposal was to merge the Higher Secondary Directorate with the Department of Public Instruction and also integrate the vocational higher secondary stream with the higher secondary stream.

The present system of multiple heads in one school — a headmaster or headmistress for the school and a principal for the higher secondary school-— will go with the introduction of the new system.

Moreover, name of the post will be formally fixed as principal (lower primary), Principal (upper primary) and principal (secondary). Sources said that the committee with educationalist G. Jyothichoodan and C. Ramakrishnan also as members.
