Supreme Court seeks advice on porn ban
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Centre to render expert assistance on whether explicit sexual videos, particularly child pornography, can be prevented from being uploaded on the internet.
A bench of Justices Madan B. Lokur and Uday Lalit on Monday morning made this request after senior counsel for Google Abhishek Manu Singhvi made it clear that it will be impossible to prevent materials from being uploaded and they can only be blocked on a complaint or if it is brought to the notice of the service provider.
Justice Lokur told counsel R. Balasubramanian for the Centre “You do nothing. Yet you say the nodal agency will do everything. You do your work, we will dismiss this PIL.”
Counsel assured the court that government will consult information technology expert and inform the measures that could be taken in this regard.
The bench was responding to a suggestion from counsel Ms Aparna Bhat for the petitioner NGO Prajwala that China had evolved successfully a “firewall” to prevent any offensive material on the internet.
