Digvijay Singh booked for madrasa tweet

MBT says Congress leader offended lakhs of students.

Hyderabad: Police booked a case against Congress leader Digvijay Singh for “outraging the religious feelings of a community.” Police booked the case after receiving a complaint from MBT leader Amjadullah Khan, who alleged that Digvijay’s tweet on madrasas hurt his community. Police booked a case against Digvijay under Section 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage the religious feelings of any group by insulting their religion or religious beliefs), Dabeerpura police officials said.

In his complaint, Amjadullah Khan stated, “On February 22, Mr Digvijay Singh tweeted, 'Is there any difference between madrasas and the Saraswati Shishu Mandir Schools run by the RSS? I don’t think so. Both spread hatred. The statements of Mr Digivijay Singh are condemnable as it labels the lakhs of students and the Muslim community as anti-Indian and anti-social elements.”

“The remarks of Digivijay Singh have hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community as madrasas are schools where Islamic Education is imparted. Students are taught various aspects of Islam and modern subjects including the state’s official language Telugu and languages like Marathi and Odiya,” the petitioner said. “Lakhs of students including Hindus irrespective of their social, status or background are enrolled at madrasas in the country. Madrasas have played an important role in the freedom struggle of the country and that is a well known fact,” he added.
