Chennai: Cars remain impounded pending checks

The list of seized cars includes 3 Lamborghinis, 2 Porsches, 2 Audis, a Land Rover, a Ferrari, and a BMW.

Chennai: All the 10 luxury cars seized on East Coast Road (ECR) in Sunday's crackdown on rash driving will remain in a temporary shed off Kanathur Police station until Tuesday when the cars are likely to be inspected by Motor Vehicle Inspectors from the jurisdiction Regional Transport Office.The cars, whose value would run to several crores of rupees, were moved to the shed in a facility of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) located behind Kanathur Police Station off ECR, for safe-keeping. The list of seized cars includes 3 Lamborghinis, 2 Porsches, 2 Audis, a Land Rover, a Ferrari, and a BMW.

The purview of the inspection would be to verify modifications, if any, were done on the seized sports cars. The cars would be released to the respective owners soon after being cleared in motor vehicle inspection. In all, 10 driver-cum-owners of these cars were booked under sections 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way), 336 (Act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 184 (Driving dangerously), 189 (Racing and trials of speed), 190 (2) (Any person who drives or causes or allows to be driven, in any public place a motor vehicle, which violates the standards prescribed in relation to road safety, control of noise and air-pollution) and 177 (General provision for punishment of offences) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. One more section was added in the case of a Lambhorghini driver identified as Raghav Krishnan who nearly ran over a police inspector’s foot and was charged under IPC section 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty).
