Spotlight on shock waves' after Meteorite hit in Tamil Nadu

Shock waves can even kill people; an example is the recent death of a man killed by meteorite in Tamil Nadu.

Coimbatore: A two-day national symposium on shock waves was jointly organised by Karunya University and Indian Institute of Science (IISC).

Dr K.P.J. Reddy, president of Shock Wave Society of India said, “Shock waves have enormous applications and we are trying to implement it in various disciplines like chemistry, material sciences, medicine and right up to veterinary like the artificial insemination of cows. It can even kill people; an example is the recent death of a man killed by meteorite in Tamil Nadu. We have a large number of people working in the shock waves and related applications.”

Shock wave applications can be industrialised which generates funds. Shock waves are used in tea production. “We are trying to implement this in kitchen applications for making juce,” he added. Shock waves can be used to clean water at a lower cost.

“It has tremendous potential and we are planning to experiment with the idea of shock waves in Karunya University to a greater extent. The research on this area can be carried without spending lot of money,” said Dr. Reddy. Over 200 delegates attended the symposium.
