Part-time school teachers go on hunger strike in Coimbatore
Coimbatore: Part-time schoolteachers staged a daylong hunger strike in Coimbatore on Saturday, demanding that the State government declare them as permanent staff.
In a bid to draw the attention of the government, a group of 450 teachers, including 300 women belonging to the Tamil Nadu Part-time Teachers Association staged a hunger strike near Sivananda colony powerhouse in Coimbatore.
R. Anandakumar, district president of the Association told the DC that around 16,549 part-time teachers were deputed throughout the state in March 2012 under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).
“We work three half-days a week and are paid Rs 7,000 per month. We demand job confirmation as well as bringing us under the school Education department,” he said.
“Our teachers are staging hunger strikes in front of the Chennai DPI office, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Karur, Krishnagiri, Nagapattinam, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari districts over these demands,” said Anandakumar.
