Wear helmet, seat belt for safety: Cops

Traffic awareness programmes would be conducted throughout the week in several parts of the state till February 2.

Hyderabad: The transport department inaugurated the 31st National Road Safety Week on Monday in which the usage of seat belt, helmet and regulation of speeding were stressed by transport minister P. Puvvada Ajay Kumar and Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar. Traffic awareness programmes would be conducted throughout the week in several parts of the state till February 2.

Speaking at the event held at the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) grounds, Mr Ajay Kumar said, “It is everybody’s responsibility to have an accident-free city and state. Each and every individual should take the responsibility by wearing helmets and seat belts. Fatality rates in accidents can be reduced.”

A bike rally was conducted on the occasion, in which Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar, transport commissioner M.D. Sunil Sharma, actress Eesha Rebba and others participated. A blood donation camp was also organised.

In a traffic awareness session at Rachakonda, police commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat said most of the road accidents occur due to negligence of the driver including drunken driving, talking on mobile phone while driving or poor condition of the vehicles.
