1,640 polio camps to cover 7 lakh kids
Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation has geared up 1,640 polio vaccination camps in the city during the first phase of the pulse polio campaign to be conducted on Sunday.
According to a Chennai Corporation statement, over 7.06 lakh children under 5 years of age would be given polio vaccine at 1,640 camps readied across the city. Although the country has been declared as polio-free, neighbouring countries are prone to the disease, which made the polio campaign essential, the statement added. Of the total 1,640 camps, 1,436 are permanent camps and 41 are mobile camps.
The civic body also implored the parents to ensure bringing their children to polio camps, even though they are given a vaccine earlier. The camps have been set up at Chennai Corporation health centres, government and private hospitals, schools, medical centres, railway stations, bus stands and midday meal centres. Mobile camps are also being arranged at Marina beach, Island grounds tourism fair and CMBT.
The polio camps would function from 7 am to 5 pm without intervals. As many as 6,700 persons would be employed belonging to government departments and NGOs in the polio camp, the civic body said. The Chennai Corporation also said that it had provided polio vaccines to 29,63,320 children during 4 polio campaigns conducted in 2016 and 2017.
