Four arrested in pipe bomb case in Madurai

Police secured Abdullah and Abdullah Rahman from K Pudur and seized two-pipe bombs from a tailor shop owned by Rahman yesterday.

Madurai: The Madurai city police on Friday arrested four persons for allegedly conspiring to plant pipe bombs and cause disruption at a Hindu Munnani (HM) meeting scheduled at Palladam in Coimbatore in February.

Police gave the names of persons booked in the case as Ukkarapandi alias Abdullah Rahman (43) from Gandhipuram, K Pudur, Abdullah (30) from Viswanatha Nagar, K Pudur, Kader (30) from Nelpatti and Syed Oman (41) from Cumbum under the Explosives Substances Act, 1908 and remanded them to judicial custody.

All the four belong to ‘Muslim Munnani Pasarai’, which was floated last year at Begampur in Dindigul with an aim to legally assist Muslims undergoing jail terms in explosives and other cases, police said.

Police secured Abdullah and Abdullah Rahman from K Pudur and seized two-pipe bombs from a tailor shop owned by Rahman yesterday. Based on their confession, police also secured Kader and Syed Oman.

The police followed the movements of Abdulla after he allegedly spoke to a television channel, when he along with his son, participated in the protest organised for jallikattu at Tamukkam ground here recently.

According to police, the gang planned to plant a bomb at the HM meeting because its leader Ramagopalan allegedly spread hatred against Islamic community.

Oman had allegedly made the pipe bomb at Cumbum and Kader transported it to Madurai and hide it in the tailor shop with the help of Abdullah.

As the police have upped security during the jallikattu protests, they could not move the pipe bombs to other place, police sources said. The ‘Muslim Munnani Pasarai’ is functioning mainly in Madurai, Thanjavur, Karur and Theni districts.
