Night walk planned in Kerala

According to rough estimate, over 50,000 women are likely to take part in the event.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Come December 29 night and women in Kerala will descend on the streets to declare “public space is my space too.”

The initiative called ‘Night Walk’ is the first of its kind to be held on such a large scale in the state. Women from all age groups will walk a minimum of 2 km between 11 pm and 1 am on Sunday in 100 towns across state.

According to rough estimate, over 50,000 women are likely to take part in the event.

Social justice minister K.K. Shailaja says there are two main objectives behind the ‘night walk’. First, there is a sense of apprehension, fear and worry among women about venturing out in the night. So the idea is to help get rid of that fear.

Secondly, there is a minuscule section in society which has the tendency to target women in the night hours, especially women who have to travel. The purpose of the event is also to collect details of such elements, hand them over to police for ensuring strict action. The main organiser of the event is Nirbhaya Cell which functions under the WCD department.
